Westerfeld was born in Dallas, Texas on May 5, 1963. His mother, Pamela and his father, Lloyd are both from Texas. He has two older sisters, Wendy and Jackie. Most of his life was spent living in Texas, California, and Connecticut. He received a BA in Philosophy from Vassar in 1985. Before he became a successful writer, he held a few interesting jobs. He was a factory worker making lead soldiers, substitute teacher, textbook editor, and a software designer. Growing up his favorite book was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and his favorite writer was Samuel R. Delany.

He is married to the writer Justine Larbalestier and they split their time between Sydney, Australia and New York City.

On his blog, he revealed that he is currently working on his next novel, to be titled Afterworlds. "Afterworlds is going to be a long piece of work, with two novels wrapped into one in a strange and mystical way. I’m maybe halfway done, so the novel isn’t going to be in anyone’s hands until late next year."
